Book Review: The Final Score by Carys Jones

I’m excited to be welcoming Carys Jones to Novel Kicks and the blog tour for her book, The Final Score.

It’s never too late for revenge…

Connie Winchester was once a celebrated music prodigy… but those days are long behind her. So when Daniel Layton shows up on her doorstep to interview her about her career, Connie Winchester is flattered to be remembered.

But as he moves through her story, it all comes back. Robin. Her friends. The drugs. What happened that final night. The lies she told.

Connie has been running from her past for years. But now there’s nowhere left to run…

*****

Connie Winchester has led an illustrious life as a world leading violin player but feels like the world has all but forgotten her. Now in her 80’s, she agrees to be interviewed. As she begins to talk about her life, it comes back to haunt her.

I was intrigued to read this novel from Carys Jones and pleased to be invited onto the blog tour for The Final Score.

Connie Winchester is an interesting enigma. It wasn’t hard to fall into this novel simply because her story is a fascinating one. As it’s gradually unwound throughout the narrative and you learn more about her, her life is one that has seen many things. Ooh, I don’t want to say too much as I don’t want to give it away.

The plot was skilfully revealed  with heart breaking moments along the way and one more page quickly turned into one more chapter.

I’m not going to lie, there are some heavy themes covered including domestic and sexual violence, drug use, mental health and PTSD. It’s a good study as to how these kinds of trauma can affect a person and what happens when you don’t get the appropriate help. It also looks at the  effect generational trauma can have.

Carys Jones does a great job of presenting flawed characters that you both root for and don’t trust all at the same time.

The Final Score is a psychological thriller that keeps you guessing all the way through. It’s one of the best of its genre I’ve read this year. If you’re going on that last minute summer getaway or want a thrilling tale, this book is for you.

I’m Laura. I started Novel Kicks in 2009. I wanted a place to post my writing as well as give other writers like me the opportunity to do the same. There is also a monthly book club, a writing room which features writing prompts, book reviews, competitions, author interviews and guest posts.

I grew up by the sea (my favourite place in the world) and I currently live in Hampshire. I am married to Chris, have a cat named Buddy and I would love to be a writer. I’m trying to write the novel I’ve talked so much about writing if only I could stop pressing delete. I’ve loved writing since creative writing classes in primary school. I have always wanted to see my teacher Miss Sayers again and thank her for the encouragement. When not trying to write the novel or writing snippets of stories on anything I can get my hands on, I love reading, dancing like a loon and singing to myself very badly. My current obsession is Once Upon a Time and I would be happy to live with magic in the enchanted forest surrounded by all those wonderful stories provided that world also included Harry Potter. I love reading chick lit. contemporary fiction and novels with mystery.
