Dead Gone by Luca Veste, published by Avon, December 2013. 

A serial killer is stalking the streets of Liverpool, gruesomely murdering victims as part of a series of infamous unethical and deadly psychological experiments.

When it becomes apparent that each victim has ties to the City of Liverpool University, DI David Murphy and DS Laura Rossi realise they’re chasing a killer unlike any they’ve hunted before – one who doesn’t just want his victims’ bodies, but wants their minds too.

I read a lot of this book when I should have been doing other things (including sleep.) I was hooked from the very first page. I do like a good mystery and this book does that very well. Right until the last few pages, this book had me guessing and even though I thought I had solved the puzzle, there was a twist and surprise right at the end that proved that I didn’t have it figured out.

Murphy is a flawed but likeable character and Rossi makes up a good partnership.

The style of writing lent itself to building the tension really well. There wasn’t a dull moment in the book for me.

Being the first in a series, I am looking forward to reading the sequel to Dead Gone.  

A great physiological thriller that fans of Mark Billingham and Ian Rankin will love or for people who want a great introduction to the crime genre.

When not trying to write the novel or writing snippets of stories on anything I can get my hands on, I love reading, dancing like a loon and singing to myself very badly. My current obsession is Once Upon a Time and I would be happy to live with magic in the enchanted forest surrounded by all those wonderful stories provided that world also included Harry Potter. I love reading chick lit. contemporary fiction and novels with mystery.
