Here’s the blurb:
“I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, then all at once.”
Despite the tumour-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.
The Fault in our Stars explores the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.
Laura’s Verdict:
This book wasn’t what I expected at all. I have to admit that I didn’t read the blurb before starting the book – I wanted to read it based on the title.
This book made me laugh, smile, sad and cry. Hazel and Gus were great characters to get to know and it’s an interesting look at how these two teenagers form a relationship around having to battle cancer – the outcome for Hazel inevitable. Augustus and Hazel’s relationship shows that sometimes people come into your life when you least expect but sometimes when you need them most. They were sweet characters.
The subject matter is hard going yes but it’s tackled well and with great humour at various points too.
There were certain plot points I saw coming but some surprising ones too. I couldn’t put the book down (despite having other things to do.)
I think Augustus was my favourite character. He just seemed interesting, sweet and likeable. Although mysterious at the beginning, you do learn a little about him toward the end.
Conclusion: I loved this book.
What did you think? Did you like the characters? Who would you cast in the lead roles?
