I work in a small office next to my bedroom. When we moved into our house seventeen years ago it was billed as another bedroom, but was a bit impractical as you had to walk into our bedroom to get into it. So we decided to turn it into a bathroom and dressing room. Then I decided to go freelance and started writing, so we thought, how much space do we really need for clothes? and turned it into a study instead. My husband is very handy round the house, so he built the desk and shelves himself, and a lovely decorator pal of ours painted it for us.
I love it because I look out onto the garden, and allotments beyond, so I have a great view if I’m bored. I also have pictures of the children, and things they made for me when they were small on the shelves which always make me smile. And a lovely photo of my dad laughing. Sadly he died before I had children, so he never knew I became a writer. He was an English teacher, so I like to think he would have been pleased!
I do love working here, as it’s a cosy space and I literally have to crawl out of bed to go to work. Though the downside is the temptation to crawl back in can be immense…
