Breakfast At Darcy’s by Ali McNamara.
Sphere, 2011.
About the book:
When Darcy McCall loses her aunt, she doesn’t expect to inherit a small island. Tara is located off the west coat of Ireland and hasn’t been inhabited for years, but according to her aunt’s will, Darcy must stay there for twelve months before she can fully inherit. She will also need to persuade a village full of people to settle there with her.
Darcy will have to leave her independent life behind and swop heels for wellies, a magazine job for dealing with plumbing and pubs. Also, Darcy meets Connor and grumpy Dermot. Who will make her feel totally at home?
Novel Kick’s verdict:
I was a huge fan of From Notting Hill…With Love Actually. I had high expectations for McNamara’s follow up, Breakfast At Darcy’s. I was hooked from pretty much the first page. Darcy is a wonderful character and I feel that she develops and changes a lot during the course of the plot.
Conor and Dermot are great love interests and I liked the little nod to Pride and Prejudice too, both in the name Darcy and the dynamic between the three characters.
There were twists in the plot, which was surprising, and the story didn’t end the way I expected which is always a good thing where I am concerned. It had me laughing out loud and by the end of it, I had a smile on my face and it made me want to go and live on a small island.
Darcy faces many challenges; getting a community to pull together when she had only just met all the characters but I liked that. It felt as though Darcy and I were learning about people at the same time and therefore I could relate.
A wonderfull, feel-good book. If you fancy something to read whilst snuggling in out of the cold then I recommend Breakfast At Darcy’s.
