Review by Laura Parish.
I must admit that Audio Books aren’t my favourite medium for reading fiction. I love holding books in my hand as I read. Therefore, it took me a while to settle into ‘The Lighthouse,’ – not through the story’s fault, but my attention to something I can’t hold as I read. When I discovered that an Audio Book is a perfect driving partner, I was away and then couldn’t stop listening.
The Lighthouse is a good, old fashioned murder mystery. Not familiar with P.D James, it was a good introduction to her writing (I was also pleasantly surprised to hear she’d written the novel to which the film ‘Children of Men’ was based.)
It follows Adam Dalgliesh and his team and their investigation on a fictional cornish Island named Coombe. It nicely introduces all the characters (incase you’re not familiar with the Dalgliesh stories) before plunging you into the mystery which has many twists and turns before coming to a brilliant ending. It had me guessing until the end. One small niggle was that the female characters were slightly stereotyped but it’s not a deal-breaker. Overall, a brilliant murder mystery.
As for Audio Books, I’m now sold and I totally recommend this one, especially if you like your mysteries. I found it a great driving companion and it made my journeys too and from work a lot quicker.
